Assessing the factors believed to explain long term recovery success among those affiliated with a prominent, but under-studied, recovery network.

Why is it important?
Very little research is done on factors believed to contribute to stable recovery. Despite the established research on samples of people affiliated with twelve step programs, little research has been conducted on people affiliated with alternate recovery programs. This study used a sample of participants affiliated with SMART Recovery and assessed them on measures believed to explain long term recovery success. Self beliefs explained a significant amount of quality of life. Other factors, including professional and peer supports, did not.
Perspectives
I hope this article reminds readers of the importance of developing goals for people in later stages of recovery that are distinct from the goals needed in early recovery. This article also outlines recovery capital, ways to conceptualize quality of life, and stages of recovery.
