What is it about?

The Virginia Department of Health funded 32 Walgreens retail pharmacies across Virginia to perform walk-in rapid HIV testing using a 1-minute test.

Why is it important?

This was the first statewide pharmacy HIV testing program. Pharmacies have been identified as a missed opportunity to expand access to rapid HIV testing. This program provides important evidence about the effectiveness of retail pharmacies as an access point for HIV testing.

Perspectives

The most important finding of this program, for me, is that many of the clients who tested positive had never been tested for HIV before. The goal of the program was to expand access to HIV testing, and that finding lets me know that the program was, at its core, successful public health work.
