What is it about?
Lead is a poison that can be released during construction projects. We show how a hospital, health department, and community groups can work together to prevent lead exposure in children living near a construction site.

Why is it important?
Community members are on "the front line" of large public works projects in their communities. Sometimes there can be toxic hazards that can be released during construction. We worked with community members directly to inform them about how to avoid lead hazards in their neighborhood. This was really only possible because the university, hospital, health department, and community worked together towards this objective.
Perspectives
It was a pleasure working with all the people on this article because we all wanted to help this community. Writing this article was a bit difficult because it is not a "typical" scientific article; there is some data, but mostly it tells a story about how we worked together and what we learned from it. I hope that other groups can use what we learned and apply it in other situations.
