What is it about?

Although many schools claim to be engaging in Professional Learning Communities (PLC's), we find that much of the practices are better described as "PLC Lite" - and that is a prescription for frustration. The article provides explicit guidelines for deep and effective implementation of Professional Learning Communities.

Why is it important?

Although Professional Learning Communities have great potential to improve faculty collaboration and student achievement, many implementations of PLC's are failing because the use of the label - PLC's - supplants the actual practices necessary for PLC's. This article helps readers resolve that conflict.

Perspectives

The landmark work of the late Rick DuFour in explaining and implementing Professional Learning Communities has influenced generations of educators. But in this article, one of Rick's last communications before his untimely death in 2017, we make the case the there is an enormous difference between adopting a label and implementing effective professional practices.
