What is it about?
Irrigation becomes more important even in temperate regions, due to climate changes that bring us more frequent extreme climate events. This study deals with irrigation development in water-scarce regions, where limited water resources define irrigation development. Moreover, the investments and operating costs represent the burden for implementation of large-scale irrigation projects. The raised issues, how to balance all aspects of the project (technical, environmental, economic), have importance at the regional and national level.

Why is it important?
This study deals with expanding the irrigated area in a water-scarce region and the issues raised have relevance internationally wherever similar conditions (limitations and prospects) apply. The proposed approach to irrigation planning is suitable to balance demand with supply, to reduce environmental problems and to obtain economic viability.
