What is it about?

This study investigated the extent to which children's music achievement was related to their achievement in language reading skills, their academic ability, and their tonal discrimination ability.

Why is it important?

This study demonstrated a relationship between learning in reading and learning in music. Specifically in this study, children's achievement with reading comprehension was related to their ability to learn how to read notation and accurately sing the pitches represented by the notation.

Perspectives

This study adds to other recent studies that are providing evidence of a relationship of learning language and reading skills with learning in music. Music instruction may play a more important role in the elementary curriculum than previously known. Reducing time allocated for music instruction in order to increase instructional time for other academic subjects may be counterproductive.
