What is it about?

Children who sleep less at night are more susceptible to develop gum inflammation. Inadequate sleep has deleterious effects on health by suppressing immunity and promoting inflammation.

Why is it important?

Insufficient sleep is a well-established risk factor that negatively affects daytime functioning, and contributes to progression of several chronic conditions in children such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other inflammatory disorders. This was the first study to show how can little sleep enhance gum disease in children through suppressing immunity and promoting inflammation.

Perspectives

Public health intervention programs should consider behavioral sleep improvement by educating children and parents about the importance of sleep quality on overall health, in addition to maintain healthy diet and proper oral hygiene habits.
