What is it about?

This article examines the work of the Criminal Records Bureau, for it's inception, through opening in 2002 to it's closure in 2012. It highlights fundamental errors made in each stage which collectively resulted in a collapse in political and public confidence in the Bureau, which ultimately led to it's demise and which it's replacement, the Disclosure and Barring Service, might do well to avoid.

Why is it important?

This is an original piece of legal analysis examining one of the most important public-private bodies in England and Wales over the last two decades. The 'CRB Check' has become a part of ordinary lexicography, and the collapse of the Bureau is therefore of obvious importance.
