What is it about?

This paper examines the relationship between Francoism and the Portuguese Estado Novo in the sphere of control of workers’ leisure time. It basically consisted of two social tourism programmes: hosting workers from the neighbouring country in holiday centres, and organizing trips in order to get to know the monuments and culture of the other country.

Why is it important?

We don't have many comparative works on Iberian Fascist dictatorships, not one using this kind of Social History perspective. The paper allows to incorporate the two Iberian cases to the current discussions on the topic of social tourism experiences under XXth Centuy dictatorships.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great and funny experience. It was my first serious incursion in a topic (History of Tourism) little far from my previous work. I hope to develope new papers in this line (Social History of Fascism): leisure, sports, youth activities, housing and urban planning, etc... in the next years.
