What is it about?
The article examines the influence of modernity on African culture and architecture. It argues that some elements of African architecture need to be preserved even as African cities rush to have modern buildings. A number of these elements have cultural significance. It is thus important to incorporate these elements in modern designs.

Why is it important?
African architecture is often looked down upon in the process of developing modern cities. This article argues that being modern does not mean throwing away culture. Look at cities in the UK, Europe and China.
Perspectives
I enjoyed researching for and writing this article with colleagues who have long years in teaching and practicing architecture. It was also important for me because the research was done amongst my people; the Lamba people of the Copperbelt Province.
