What is it about?

This article examines some key theological aspects of the Journal 'Markings' of Dag Hammarskjold. It is built on two words commonly used by the author in trying to articulate his religious experience and his relationship with God, namely 'Yes' and 'Thou.' The investigation results in an increased appreciation of the Trinitarian quality of his religious consciousness and its associated sapiential character.

Why is it important?

There has been a recent revival of interest in Hammarskjold, particularly through the work of Roger Lipsey. Much of the writing about 'Markings' has tended to focus on their spiritual, ethical or political aspects. This article tries to adopt a more theological approach by investigating 'Markings' in the light of past and contemporary sources.

Perspectives

In being prompted to read Hammarskjold's journal through contact with Lipsey's work, I was surprised to find in his articulation of his religious experience that there were resonances and similarities with the Trinitarian, sapiential and virtue traditions.
