What is it about?

Interviews were conducted with mental health professionals to explore the importance of mental health social work in Malaysia. Participants reported that mental health social workers are important and contribute to total patient care, especially in providing psychoeducation to clients and their family.

Why is it important?

At present, there are no specific post for psychiatric/mental health social workers in Malaysia. Additionally, there is an increase of mental health issues from 10.7% in 1996 to 29.2 percent in 2015. Thus, it is timely to explore whether there is a need for a specific post in psychiatry/mental health social work.
