Why is it important?

The value of international field education is highlighted, along with some strategies for programme leadership. The importance of skilled programme facilitation is emphasised in relation to student learning outcomes and ethical engagement with host communities. A framework for the facilitation of critical reflective workshops is presented. Students' reflections on gender, social justice and human rights are explored and learning outcomes are described.

Perspectives

A strength of this article is that it enables students' voices to come to the fore as they articulate how the study abroad experience has impacted on their learning. This paper is one of a series of three papers focusing on this particular study abroad programme to India; the other two papers focus on professional identity (Moorhead, et al.) and environmental social work (Boetto, et al.).
