What is it about?

Ranitidine is a H2-receptor antagonist drug that can be given orally or intravenously. We studied the chemical stability and physical compatibility of the undiluted drug in glass vials or when diluted in normal saline and stored in plastic syringes and when the oral solution was packaged in plastic syringes and stored at room temperature.

Why is it important?

Long term stability under these conditions and concentrations has never been determined. The solutions stored in glass vials were stable for 6 months at room temperature and in the frig. Solutions diluted with NS and packaged in plastic syringes were found to be stable for 3 months when stored at either room temperature or under refrigeration. Oral ranitidine solution was stable for 12 months at room temperate in amber plastic syringes. Exposure to light had no effect on the stability of the solutions.

Perspectives

We hope this article will help other healthcare professionals who are looking for stability information regarding ranitidine.
