What is it about?
A new group of drugs is being developed to prevent migraines. The drugs act in a different way than current drugs. The first drugs that may become approved will probably be given by injection, but oral forms of the drugs are being developed.

Why is it important?
Current treatments to prevent migraines have adverse effects and do not work in all patients. A new class of drugs will offer an alternative for patients.
Perspectives
I hope this article provides a way for patients and health care providers to know about a new potential treatment to prevent migraine headaches. Formulary committees should be especially interested in the status of drugs that may be competing against each other and the routes they will be administered.
