What is it about?
This article surveys, evaluates, and updates the argument that some sort of 'over-realised eschatology' lies behind the varied problems evident in 1 Corinthians. It looks at the key texts as well as the views of influential interpreters.

Why is it important?
The 'over-realised eschatology' hypothesis has had a number of vocal critics, but has remained strongly represented in scholarship. Although some are claiming that there is a new consensus, this is simply not the case. It is timely to review and update the case for this view of the letter's situation.
Perspectives
This article arose from a presentation I gave on the same topic at SBL 2015, at the kind invitation of Linda Belleville. It was discussed by a panel including Belleville, Craig Keener, Craig Blomberg, BJ Oropeza, Ben Witherington, and Roy Ciampa. I have tried to take their discussion into account in this version.
