What is it about?

We show how proximity to a power line predicts citizen opposition. We find that citizen communication networks are a primary driver of opposition. Additionally, trust in the project sponsor conditions the effects of distance in citizen opposition attitudes.

Why is it important?

After 40+ years of "not in my backyard" research, we finally have empirical estimates of the effect of proximity on citizen opposition. We rank the importance of proximity, communications networks, the perceived risk of the power line, trust in project sponsor in explaining opposition.

Perspectives
