Why is it important?

Spending time playing in and exploring their home neighborhood can help children to develop and gain important skills. However, contemporary children seem to be spending much less time playing in and around their neighborhoods than previous generations. This study confirms that many children now spend a great deal of their leisure time indoors, which may be having a negative effect on their development. This study also tries to understand whether there are social or environmental factors which are contributing to the decrease in time children spend outdoors in their neighborhoods.
