What is it about?

Successful tutoring models with K-12 students are described. The formats are used in Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA', and during school hours. The content of the tutoring is reading, math and student retention for at risk urban students. The E. Desmond Lee Regional Institute of Tutorial Education is an urban community tutoring collaborative consisting of 5 regional universities, ten United Way funded youth agencies and four provisionally or unaccredited school districts. It is located at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and has been in operation for twenty years. The descriptions provide resources for other tutoring programs to follow.

Why is it important?

Student achievement and retention in urban schools nation-wide is not where the students need it. This Institute with its collaborative of university, after-school and school district resources and expertise are demonstrated for others. The targets of all programs are to retain, improve academic achievement and expand social skills of under served youth in urban setting.

Perspectives

There is no such collaborative throughout the nation. This multi-district, multi-university, multi-youth agency institute is a useful organization for all members in this era of declining resources. For example, scholarships to community colleges and UMSL are provided to students who participate in a tutoring program that requires members remain child free and graduate. In addition, students who are in writing tutoring programs are brought to the universities for summer writing workshops, self-defense classes and tours of engineering, nursing and optometry schools. The multi-year tutoring programs are effective in building academic and social skills with university employed and trained student tutors.
