What is it about?

The study describes and explain the main fields of migration abroad from the Romanian villages. The description is accomplished on the basis of a community census by key informants in all the villages of the country. The migration experience of the villages is explained by network capital, migration cultures and unemployment at community level.

Why is it important?

The research proposed and tested, first of all, the method of community census for describing and explaining the migration-development nexus at local community level. Secondly, it introduced the concept of potential or emergent transnational communities.

Perspectives

The approach of migration by the community census method allows for a large comparison of a great number of communities by their migration-development profiles.
