What is it about?

This article responds to what the author calls "the Dawkins Objection" and "the Wiebe Objection"--namely, that theology has no actual subject matter and is methodologically compromised by religious faith. The article affirms that theology seems to meet the usual academic standards in both respects, and thus deserves a place in the university.

Why is it important?

Theology is under a shadow in many universities around the world even as it holds a traditional and respected place in some of the great universities. If theology is a genuine discipline of inquiry, it deserves a place in every university.

Perspectives

The author is a theologian, but also a historian of higher education and a philosopher of knowledge. Thus the article draws on several disciplines to make its case.
