What is it about?

The Christian Bible is now available in thousands of digital forms, re-imagined for electronic reading on mobile, tablet and desktop screens. This article introduces a survey of users, to find out who they are, how they use digital media, and how they think their engagement with the Bible is changing. The article also looks at what Christian writers are saying about digital Bibles, and what other researchers have said about different kinds of e-reading.

Why is it important?

Millions of people around the world now read the Bible digitally, in hundreds of different languages. The most popular digital Bible, YouVersion, has been installed more than 200 million times worldwide. If reading on a screen changes how we engage with a text, then this new trend could have important consequences for the future of the Bible.
