What is it about?

This is a commentary on a paper by Jean Laplanche in which he questions what Melanie Klein has added to psychoanalysis and at the same time how she veered away from the fundamental sexual nature of the unconscious.

Why is it important?

Jean Laplanche has made the most trenchant criticism of psychoanalysis and Freud`s work from within the bounds of the psychoanalysis itself. This paper shows how he uses his deep understand of Freud’s writings to work Freud against himself at times. This particular paper in particular shows how Klein took the idea that the sexual and fantasy were inherited quasi-biological entities from Freud and pushed those ideas into a rigid theoretical framework.
