What is it about?

The American Catholic church is perceived as having contributed relatively little to the progress of Latinos, especially when compared to the social mobility that the church historically nurtured among other predominantly Catholic immigrant groups. In this study we examine an exception to this rule in the case of Mexican immigrant families raising their children in postwar Midwestern cities. We find that inclusion in local urban parishes and their private schools frequently promoted the chances of socioeconomic mobility for second and third generation Mexican Americans growing up at the time.
