What is it about?

Urban poor population in India is posing enormous challenges to the urban planning because there is a huge scarcity of segregated data in context of urban poor. Five year plans gives an overview of how urban poor population has been estimated for planning and how the data deficiency in planning for them has been realized. Urban poor areas have constellation of issues but without data a comprehensive understanding is drastically lacking about their vulnerabilities. A segregated data is needed for evidence and need based planning. Undoubtedly there are challenges in collecting the segregated data. But these challenges need to be addressed because planning so far is based on an average situation of urban poor population, while all urban poor and the slums cannot be said equally vulnerable. Segregated data of urban poor is essential for inclusive planning in context of urban poor and to build sustainable cities.
