What is it about?
This study analyzed survival outcomes in exercise-related sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes in the United States.

Why is it important?
Almost all cases (93%) of sudden cardiac arrest in athletes during exercise are witnessed, yet over half (52%) still result in sudden death. Black and minority athletes were twice as likely to die from sudden cardiac arrest as white athletes.
Perspectives
Exercise-related sudden cardiac arrest is largely a survivable event (90%) with prompt recognition, early CPR and defibrillation. Improved recognition and management of sudden cardiac arrest in young athletes and access to AEDs for early defibrillation will improve survival. Disparities in preparation and the availability in emergency equipment must be addressed.
