What is it about?
Dietary supplements are used by athletes and the general population in an increasing fashion. Several types of supplements are prone to contamination and adulteration such as muscle building and energy supplements. They are often contaminated with substances like steroids and amphetamines. This can lead to side effects and failed drug tests for athletes.

My article outlines the scope of the problem and several ways physicians and other providers can help their patients avoid this products, such as using third party verification companies and educating athletes about the safety issues.
Perspectives
This is an important article for all those providers who care for athletes, but also for athletes to understand the risk they face when taking these mostly unregulated products that are reported to help improve their health. The truth is they are at risk for unintentional medication ingestion and the potential side effects.
