Why is it important?

Epidemiological studies suggest that ACE-inhibitor medications prevent dementia or slow the cognitive decline in people with dementia. The mechanism of this possible effect is not known. Finding out that these medications are associated with increased blood levels of beta-amyloid is important because it provides some initial evidence that the protective effect of these medications may involve an improvement in the clearance of beta-amyloid from brain to blood.
