What is it about?

In this study we quantify the effect of catch and finish rowing postures on selected body measurements and skin-sportswear interface pressure for competitive male rowers age 18-35. Sportwear prototypes based on athlets anthropometry were developed including garment pattern amendements due posture-based body changes. Fit and comfort of the garments in static and dynamic postures were evalauted by athlests in wear tests.

Why is it important?

Sportswear should fit well each individual athlete while preserving its ergonomic and pressure comfort upon sport-specific movements. Body measurements and interface pressure sportwear-body increase/decrease with rowing posture and sportwear should accomodate these changes i.e. not imped these movements yet preserving their comfort. We have found signficant changes of body measurments with rowing posture and the atheletes have positvely evaluated the comfort and fit of sportwear constructed based on their anthropometry as compared with sportwear based on athropoemtry of general population.


This study quantified the effect of two sport postures on several body measurements for a large group of competitive male and female rowers. Significant variations were found both for body measurements and skin–sportswear interface pressure depending on the dynamic posture and regardless of the gender. This study confirms, that collection of body measurements of the target group is essential for a good fit that can be further improved by considering both specific postures and requirements of the end user.
