What is it about?

This paper explores the lives of individuals in northern Japan (Hokkaido) who engage in hip hop music. Participant observation and individual narratives highlight the intricate entanglement of individuals in subordination to mainstream values despite their references to elements of resistance.

Why is it important?

I contend that in contrast to previous generations of hip hoppers who chose to lead lives of open resistance to mainstream values, contemporary youth prefer to engage in forms of resistance that are not evident at first sight.
