What is it about?

This article looks at the historical origins of the EU's Article 50. It focuses on the European Convention. This was a big meeting in 2002-2003 with representatives from all the EU member states and institutions. The countries of the 2004 Eastern Enlargement (e.g. Poland and the Czech Republic) were also present. The article discusses theory about exit from international organizations and federations, advances some hypotheses, and tests them on the basis of the discussions on Article 50 at the European Convention. It finds that countries with outlying characteristics and policy preferences are more likely to want or support a free exit right.
