What is it about?

High stakes tests at the end of the pre school period lead to disadvantage for some children. The emphasis on assessing English language skills means that children who are at early levels of learning English are classed as failures.

Why is it important?

My findings show that in some schools in England, the production of data has become more important than the needs of the child. In an attempt to improve data, teachers focus on the children who are closest to meeting the measures, at the expense of other children how have no hope of meeting the expected levels. These children are therefore disadvantaged by the system.


This article is based on my own experiences as a teacher. I hope that by revealing the impact of policies on young bilingual children, attitudes in the future may change.
