What is it about?

A variety of plants were tested under laboratory conditions for their ability to reduce ambient ultrafine particle (UFP) pollution. Comparing different factors, plant area was the variable that most influenced deposition. Juniper shrubs were the most effective of 13 different plants tested in reducing UFPs and four Junipers plants reduced UFP pollution approximately 20% in a chamber.

Perspectives

This paper addresses the need to explore beneficial effects plants may have on an indoor environment, specifically their ability to reduce ambient ultrafine particle pollution - a known health hazard. Previous research has examined a limited number of plants and tree species for mostly outdoor application (and modeling), however, this set of experiments attempted to examine a broad swath of plants in a controlled environment in order to apply the findings in a wide variety of settings with universal application for indoor air.
