What is it about?

Studies show that elderly patients in Nigeria know little about Alzheimer's disease. However, given the increasing number of elderly people, those with dementia and limited number geriatric specialists worldwide, this article argues that other studies also show that primary care professionals also have inadequate knowledge of AD and dementia.

Why is it important?

There is an urgent need to train primary care professionals in the early identification, diagnosis, and management of dementia, especially since these workers are often the sole point of contact with the healthcare system in many low- and middle-income countries.

Perspectives

Education of AD patients or their caregivers is important. However, given the rising population of elderly people in the world, the rising incidence of AD, and the few geriatric specialists available, primary care can help in improving the care of these patients.
