What is it about?

The article explores the meaning of self-help in Me and THE BAND`its, a participatory action research project focused on a rock band consisting of ex-inmates. As a term, “self-help” might have been misused and infected as a top-down, expert-driven notion. Could the members of a rock band comprised of ex-inmates represent an alternative view contributing new knowledge to the term? Findings indicate that Me and THE BAND`its meets primarily to play music together, not to solve personal problems. Nevertheless, playing together seems to generate self-help resources. More importantly perhaps, we found that the band members maintain their own uniqueness and independence, making musicking into a possible way out of criminality.

Why is it important?

Musicking helped the rock band of ex-inmates facilitated by a music therapist. It is possible that music therapy and user involvement also could help for other people in similar situations

Perspectives

The article articulates a strong story about a exiting and instructive research project. I hope the article can inspire to more user-led music therapy projects within the Correctional Services.
