Why is it important?

Despite the growing importance of streaming platforms and recommendation to the business and cultures of popular music, little is known so far about how people are engaging with them. In particular, the article shows how the new technologies of listening are becoming enfolded into wider consumption practices.

The article was based on work emerging from my PhD. My aim with this work was to develop an understanding of how the new technologies of music consumption were being used by listeners, and what the effects might be on popular music culture of their growing importance. One of the ways I did that was - simply - to ask people how, where and why they listened. I then used a number of automated data analysis techniques to explore what people said. The aim here was to understand what people had said whilst simultaneously explore how such technologies create knowledge.
