What is it about?

The text provides an overview of the interdisciplinary discussion on how alternatives to capitalism should best be built. It points to key recent publications on the topic and reconstructs the debate between two main strategies. On the one hand, an alternative society can be built through post-capitalism (engaging in multiple non-capitalist initiatives that organize the economy differently bottom up, for instance around food, housing, etc.). On the other hand, an alternative society needs, to be built, an anti-capitalistic collective subject (the party, in a new form) that gives political direction to actions. The text further introduces three empirical articles on alternative economies.

Why is it important?

Giving the growing awareness about the limitations and negative effects of capitalism, we need to think seriously about how we can organize the economy and society differently. The paper provides insights that help assess the merits and limitations of the post-capitalistic and anti-capitalistic strategies to achieve this.

Perspectives

This article gave me the opportunity to further reflect on the last evolution in the debate on alternative economies and to introduce three empirical papers included in this issue of Organization on alternative economies, which complement the special issue on this topic that was published in 2017, vol 24 issue 5.
