What is it about?

Tumors of the kidney in children are more commonly malignant conditions, and will require surgery or chemotherapy. The article presents the case of a 10 year old boy who had a massive tumor of the kidney, but was determined to be a benign lesion - an anastomosing hemangioma.

Why is it important?

The patient is the youngest to be diagnosed with this condition, as it has been mostly found in adults. It has also been reported in a handful of teenage patients. While rare, the possibility that this and other benign tumors can be misinterpreted as cancerous cannot be overlooked, and should therefore be considered in addressing children with tumors of the kidney.

Perspectives

The most frequent tumor of the kidney among children is Wilms' tumor. Treatment may be by the administration of chemotherapy, with the potential adverse side effects, but which will not be needed for patients with benign tumors.
