What is it about?

Adding a metabolic monitoring form to workflow demonstrated an improved rate of lab orders necessary for patients prescribed atypical antipsychotics in a community mental health setting.

Why is it important?

Patients prescribed atypical antipsychotics have a higher rate of diabetes and heart disease and this places them at risk of premature death.

Perspectives

Individuals diagnosed with a mental illness and being treated with an atypical antipsychotic are considered a vulnerable population. The APA Metabolic monitoring guidelines were developed to address the growing number of individuals being diagnosed with physical conditions leading to higher mortality. Guidelines were published in 2003 and adaptation remains low in the community. A quality improvement project was developed to address a known gap in care in a community mental health center setting. The findings demonstrated a significant increase in metabolic monitoring when the information was readily available to clinicians.
