When someone goes missing, there is more to consider than where they might be. This article looks at social and political factors that influences the likelihood of someone being reported missing. It also looks at the difficulties others face in the wake of a loved one's disappearance.

Why is it important?
Many people are reported missing each year. National figures vary across the world but it is a surprisingly common occurrence and places a huge demand on policing. For each person who goes missing, a further twelve are affected. Efforts to understand why people go missing beyond individual decision-making and the impact of their disappearance goes towards a fuller account of a significant phenomenon.
