What is it about?
State level value added tax was implemented in India from the year 2005. The paper finds that it led to growth of total tax revenues of the states. It proved once again that VAT is indeed a tax machine.

Why is it important?
Normally VAT is implemented in place of sales tax. The new tax is considered to be superior to the latter in a number of ways. The paper also finds that VAT generates more revenues than sales tax.
Perspectives
Value added tax was implemented at the state level in India with much publicity. I found it very interesting to work on this new tax.
