Detection of animal by-products in bone ashes by near infrared spectroscopy.

What is it about?

This work is about the development and validation of a methodology that can be used to find animal particles in matrices of bone ash, using simple decision rules instead of chemometric analysis.

Why is it important?

Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy is a mortal bovine disease. Epidemiologic studies have linked the disease to animal feed contaminated with infected protein. Nowadays, optical microscopy is used to analyze animal feed and its components. In this method, technical analytical expertise is very important. This is why the development of a methodology that produces results which can be rapidly and automatically compared was urgently needed. The software program developed in this work brings a different approach to chemometric solutions. Its use is simple, the results are reliable and are obtained almost instantaneously.
