What is it about?
Rates of gonorrhoea continue to rise sharply across Europe, and gonorrhoea antibiotic resistance is also increasing. This survey completed by doctors from 23 European countries shows that management of gonorrhoea varies across Europe. Most are following guidelines but some doctors do not have access to all the laboratory facilities or tests needed, and some give treatments which may not work or which may increase antibiotic resistance.

Why is it important?
Gonorrhoea antibiotic resistance is increasing. What happens in one European country will spread over time to affect all European countries. Despite this, some testing and treatment for gonorrhoea in Europe does not follow internationally accepted standards.
Perspectives
Undertaking this survey was a fantastic opportunity to work with doctors who specialise in sexually transmitted infections from across Europe. The results of the survey will be used to inform changes to the European gonorrhoea guidelines.
