What is it about?

Design by metaphor is an important skill for innovative product development. This paper proposes and tests 3 hypotheses of "good" metaphorical design. Results support all the hypotheses, which can be transformed into practical design guidelines.

Why is it important?

How to create good metaphors for product design is a challenge for designers. I propose a general framework that depicts the principles of category dissimilarity, object similarity, and feature salience imbalance, for developing simple, systematic, and practical techniques.

Perspectives

I put my reflections in design practice, review of related theories from various disciplines, and personal insights together to build a general framework that can be a common language to describe, explain, and generate good metaphors in design domains. I hope you apply the framework to creative products, service, and even business models.
