Traffic Congestion Detection from Camera Images using Deep Convolution Neural Networks

What is it about?

Traffic congestion causes significant delay and frustration to commuters and travelers alike. This study uses cameras to automatically detect congested conditions in freeways.

Why is it important?

Our findings show that cameras can be effectively used to detect congestion even in adverse conditions. This can provide travelers and traffic managers real-time update of road traffic conditions. While cameras are mostly used for manual verification of road conditions, this study helps in using them to detect congestion automatically.
