What is it about?
Probation Services in England and Wales have undergone a series of changes in the last twenty years. Most recently this involved the privatisation of a significant proportion of probation services, and a merger between the public sector prison and Probation Services. This article examines this history and identifies opportunities and threats for probation services in the near future.

Why is it important?
The article includes a detailed discussion of the history of probation changes since 2000, which has not been done before. The article also highlights some emerging issues, such as the potential for a professional register of probation practitioners.
Perspectives
The original idea for the article was a difference of opinion with a colleague about the potential impact of merging prisons and probation. The process of writing the article allowed us to identify shared positions and areas where we both needed to find out more. It was a real pleasure to collaborate in this way. We are proud of our contribution to the debate about probation, and hope the article is engaging and useful for a rang e of audiences, particularly Trainee Probation Officers.
