What is it about?

Open access (OA) content is especially important for those academic and research institutions that cannot afford research published by traditional subscription-based journals. We have examined the progress of OA adoption in developing countries within geographical areas such as Africa, Asia and Oceania.

Why is it important?

Researchers may face a serious gap between access and research content, given financial constraints within their institution. Key stakeholders, such as libraries, can assist by drawing upon their expertise to help drive the adoption of open access within these institutions. This is not without challenge. This study looks at some of the key areas upon which libraries could focus their attention.

Perspectives

Proposed library strategies for any challenge need to be practicable and feasible. So, we have endeavored to suggest actions that libraries should normally be able to undertake. We have especially promoted working with other organizational stakeholders to help build both the culture and the infrastructure to support OA adoption.
