What is it about?

The US Air Force allocates a great deal of resources to building a diverse workforce, but does the culture of the US Air Force Academy support and reinforce this goal?

Why is it important?

This research draws on sociological theory combined with qualitative data collected during focus groups with academy cadets. There is currently a dearth of critical military studies that draw on the sociological literature to analyse contemporary challenges such as inclusivity and representation in liberal democratic air forces. The findings suggest the existence of cultural and behavioural norms that could work against the inclusion of visible minority groups in the Air Force, such as women.

Perspectives

This research is a component of a larger project that explores the process of basic air force officer training in the US, UK and Australia. I hope that the research will go some way to filling the current gaps in the critical military sociology literature.
