What is it about?

College instructors often want to increase their students' participation in the classroom. Participation grades are often discussed as an incentive for students. However, some students do not enter the classroom with the same participation skillset as others. I argue that participation grades can instead be used to incentivize students to set goals and improve their participation skills.

Why is it important?

This article not only offers a new way to conceptualize participation grading, but demonstrates results showing that it can be effectively implemented in college classrooms, improving students skills and their mindsets about participation.

Perspectives

So many students believe that they are incapable of speaking in class because they are shy or introverted. I take great pride in helping those students develop classroom participation skills in my own classes and am thrilled that I can share these ideas with other instructors. Hopefully all students can learn that they have valuable perspectives to share and can develop the skills to do so.
