What is it about?

This paper explores how alcohol industry-sponsored music concerts and social events create spaces and conditions that influence young people's alcohol initiation and heavy drinking

Why is it important?

No study of this nature exists in Nigeria, where transnational alcohol companies are increasing their marketing strategies. My findings show that social events sponsorship creates conditions that influence drinking and contributes to the growing alcohol-related problems in Nigeria.

This is topical, in that Nigeria, as a part of the emerging markets of Africa does not have effective policies to control alcohol marketing.
